You are of course correct. I looked at authors and without looking at code I wrote 4 years ago assumed that they all behaved like that. What all-but-authors do today is show you the items in the VL. Changes to those items will be library-wide.

Four changes are possible.
  1. Change the dialogs to show all items regardless of VL and to operate library-wide. This is my preference.
  2. Change the dialogs to modify only the books in the VL. This will raise the problem of what to do when the user wants to change (for example) a series library-wide.
  3. Add more lines for manage_[tags, series, publisher] and add another line in the context menu "manage X" to "manage x in VL". The lines in the drop down would be greyed if there was no VL. This increases complexity for perhaps little benefit.
  4. Change nothing.
