I already tried to bulk rename the files, using the freeware Bulk Rename Utility. However, I did not find a way to change the file name extensions with this program.
A new search for bulk rename utilities brought me to Advanced renamer,
http://www.advancedrenamer.com/ , also freeware, which did the trick.
