It did once open the way it should, right after I killed half a dozen services, but it seems to be a fluke.
When I went through the Max, Norm, Min sequence again for the third time I got a different result, might have been the same as the first time. It was then that I decided to try fresh desktop shortcuts for the other programs. When they behaved as I thought they should I concluded it was something peculiar to calibre.

Interesting, when closing calibre, just after the window disappears, I momentarily see a white box (same size as the window was). I'm pretty sure this is a very recent behaviour, i.e. since Christmas - well after 2.0/Qt5. I'm not seeing that on any other programs either.
