This tell us that there was an error inside the call to calibre's db.set_custom() method while trying to use dateUpdated. I'm able to download that story with a dateUpdated custom column just fine.
That, and the fact you say it happens to 'any story from TWCS' suggests that it's a problem with your settings or set up.
I suggest you get the current calibre 2.20 installed, update to the most recent FFDL test version ( here as of this posting) and review your settings. You also might try creating a temporary test library and download it there to prove it's the settings.

I did as you said redownloaded calibre and installed the plugin from the link you gave and it didnt fix the problem.
