Once I cleared the family filters on OpenDNS I was able to download the market app and get Kobo and AirDroid. (I thought I needed AirDroid because Android KitKat no longer lets you talk to devices as mass storage, but it appears that the Fires still work "properly." Happy to know that. Makes life easier on Linux.) Can't figure out why the Kobo App was 43 MBs and (I believe) the Nook App was only 7 or 8 MBs.

But, anyhow, everything's good. Thanks for the help.
