Shirley Tallman's Sarah Woolson series might be to your liking. Sarah is an oddity as a female attorney in San Francisco in the late 19th century. Sarah's a fairly likable character though a bit humorless, if memory serves. Anna Fields narrated the first couple of books, and Carrington McDuffie took over after Fields died; both are good.
