Use the right tool for the job
If you want a jack-of-all-trades device the HP 7 plus is a decent enough brand name 7" tablet for about a c-note. Don't go off-brand, they are predominantly crap.
I would suggest not going above 7". I have a 9" B&N Nook HD+, but to be quite honest it's too big and heavy to use on public transport or carry around outside.
Moreover, every e-ink ebook reader I have owned provides a better reading experience than any tablet or phone I have used with an LCD/LED/OLED screen. It's all horses for courses. An e-ink reader is just kinder to your eyes. A non e-ink reader is going to be a compromise. An old Sony PRS-anything is going to be far better for reading than any brand new cut-price tablet.
Even my teenage daughter prefers her old Sony PRS-350 5" reader to her iPad mini for reading.
I get by with a 5 year old phone for calling and messaging, a modern ebook reader for reading, and a computer for internetting. [internetting?? Yuk.]
There is a lot of truth in the old adage "Use the right tool for the job".
