I just tested that story with a float column named #float with display format {0:,.2f}.
In personal.ini, I put:

[archiveofourown.org]
add_to_custom_columns_settings:
kudos=>#float
...and it worked fine. So, no, I don't have any idea. I don't even know where you got that error from.
