Thanks for the responses, people.
I'm going to take the general advice and re-split all my books down to chapter-sized sections.
I've got to change the font size everywhere, too. Where I used to have 1.1em - which was just right for the Sony - I need to reduce that to 0.76em for the Kobo.
Ah well. I can't say I've got nothing to do...
