Aero's a bit tricky. If you right click on your desktop and then choose "Personalize" from the resulting context menu, you'll want to select "Window Color and Appearance" from the list of choices. Once you're in the "Window Color and Appearance" settings, you should see an "Open classic appearance properties for more color options" link at the bottom (if you don't see that link, you probably already have Aero turned off). If you click that link, you should then see a list of color schemes in a list box that you can select. Select "Windows Vista Basic" and click OK.
Your SFC scan seems to show an issue with the Windows Sidebar. Have you tried closing the sidebar (right-click in the sidebar) before launching Sigil to see if it works? (You can turn it on again by typing "sidebar" in the Start->Run textbox).
