Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was a French writer, considered one of the fathers of the modern short story, and it is in this genre where he excels, describing the people and society of his time with an elegant simplicity of style.
"Mont-Oriol", published in 1887, was his third novel. It is the story of the creation of a mineral spa resort in the Auvergne region, and the love affairs of several people involved, and satirizes the financial speculation and medical mumbo-jumbo.
