Backing up - experienced a startup freeze

Experienced a startup freeze one of my Kobo Touches. And a question about backing up

It flashed to white and stayed blank then froze and no little progress squares. I thought the battery drained so plugged it in to the wall charger and pressed the reset on the back, about a minute or so later it started up and battery indicator showed fully charged. Refurbished unit still has out of the box firmware 1.9.16.

It could be the firmware is not as stable as 3.11.0. On the original touch (still possibly a refurb unit) upgraded to 3.11.0 seems to be real stable and no issues. The firmware 3.11.0 also seems to start up much faster so it's possibly just a firmware issue.

Re - Backing up

If I just want to preserve the original data structure (out of the box) do I just copy the root directory and all that's in it into a folder on windows? That is attach kobo to computer use crtl-a (select all) crtl-c (copy) crtl-v (paste) it into a new folder on windows? Maybe it's not that simple or maybe it is?
