In my opinion; little if any maintenance or tweaking needed.
Yes; upgrades do get forced (if you sync via WiFi, or sync via USB to Kobo Desktop).
Strongly recommend that you install calibre and get familiar with it as a tool to manage your eBooks, and for the Kobo, the shelves / collections etc.
