Paperwhite strange display: you can't tap anywhere

Since few days ago, the Paperwhite display has some areas where you cannot tap. They are horizontal stripes, or bands. For instance, you can tap on the upper menu: Home, Backlight, Shop, Search. But you cannot tap the following row: Font Size, Go To, Bookmarks. Then the text begins, and you can tap on alternate rows. If I want to select the first and second line, I can do that. But I cannot select the third and fourth. And so on.

No, no new software updates that could be the cause. No, I didn't spill coffee on the screen. Nor hit my dog with it.

I googled it but it seems there aren't many people with that problem.

Any ideas?

Looking at the attached picture, the area underlined in gray is where you can tap. Outside those areas, no tap is possible.
