That's just obvious. Always keep wi-fi turned off unless strictly, extremely, absolutely necessary.

Regarding the update prevention methods, I already had pointed out that the folder method was no longer working in one of my past messages.
Now according to your post it seems the BDL either has been overcome; that's a shame.
