So, what do you want them to say? If they haven't fixed it and haven't found the cause, then "We are working on it" is the best response they can give. And the problem is on the server, not the firmware. Newer firmware will not have an affect on it.

Kobo did make a change to the server in the middle of December that should fix this. It won't remove the duplicate shelves, but it should prevent it happening again. If you had no duplicates and a sync produced duplicate shelves since then, it should be reported so they can look into it.

To remove the duplicates, the simplest method is the fix duplicates function of the utilities plugin. Don't use the "purge" option. Then do a sync. That will tell the server that the duplicates are to be deleted. After that, there should be no problem with a sync.
