If you were using Windows, a non-Unix line aware editor can cause problems. But, I would expect a Mac editor to be OK.

The problem is that an error like that could be from several things. Some things to try or look at:
- Can you use the browser OK? Using the browser helps to prove it is not a network issue.
- Restart the device. Occasionally I get a problem with the network and a restart solves it.
- The sync goes through several steps. These are displayed across the top of the home screen. Did you notice what step it was in?
- Have you bought a new book recently? If so, was it a book you downloaded the preview of?
- Are there any "stack_nn.log" files in the .kobo directory? If there is one that matches the time of when the error happened, it might give a hint of what is happening. And I can see if I can supply it to Kobo to look at.
