Since I don't leave home without my ereader, I do have to carry it somehow with me, and short of being hit by a bus (and in that event even it's encased in wood within a steel briefcase, it most likely will still be broken), my readers have always been perfectly safe the way I pocket them. I don't know what other options you suggest on how to carry a reader, other than just leaving it at home, and that's not an option. I use ereaders because they are so portable.
