For what it's worth I have a Koba Aura with the exact same problem. If I press the bezel anywhere around the middle of the bottom pages start turning until I release the pressure. It takes more pressure to do this than I would normally apply while holding it but if I hold just the bottom that takes more pressure since it's off balance and that'll do it every time. So I just can't hold it that way.
When this happens no part of my finger is anywhere near the screen.
I also have a Kobo Mini and it doesn't do that, ever. I do most of my reading with my Paperwhite and it never does that. I can hold it any way I want to, anywhere I want to and no problems.
My guess is this is a defective Paperwhite and if you don't quickly find out otherwise I'd give Kindle CS a call.
