Well, since the OP specifically stated that his mother was
NOT making contact with the screen, I would say the manual -- and whether or not the OP (or his mother) have read it -- is a moot point. (Unless there's something hidden there that says squeezing the bezel will turn the page.)
Sounds like some kind of short. If it was me, I would look into getting the PW replaced. I'm guessing it will get worse.
