Wish I could help, but the only thing I can add is to make sure you only have one iDevice plugged in at a time when in Marvin and trying to connect to Calibre.
I keep forgetting I've got my iPhone plugged in when I want to sync to Calibre, and there's no warning or anything. Just that nothing happens.
Until I unplug my iPhone. Then Calibre sees the iPad.
