Definitely use Calibre to convert the books to a Kindle format, but convert to .azw3 instead, the result should look near identical to the epub format. The only thing you'll need is to install in Calibre is Apprentice Alf's Tools plugin to remove DRM (Google "Apprentice Alf" for instructions, we're not allowed to discuss it here).

There's no hacking of the Kindle involved at all. I'm basically an epub user and I use Calibre to store all of my epubs in one location. I do not keep copies of all books in both epub and azw3 format, rather Calibre is set to convert a book when it sends it to the Kindle. My library retains its epubs while the Kindle has azw3s on it.
