The 520 is a very sturdy model and the glass is designed to resist quite a bit of abuse. My mother and youngest brother both have the 520 without cases or "screen protectors" and theirs are still fine (they have had them for a good while, the 520 is no spring chicken!).

My wife has the Lumia 635 without a case or a "screen protector" that she throws in her purse every morning before work and the darn thing doesn't even have a scratch on it. She has had it for a couple of weeks.

For a phone that you got for the absolute bargain bin price of $20 (in the world of smartphones they almost paid you to have it, for that price) you could go either way: you don't need the extra protection because the phone was so damn cheap it doesn't matter. Or, the phone was so damn cheap you now have more than enough money for a few extras.
