Have you deleted the .png file using nickel, so that it is properly removed from the database and the library? Then added the .png file to the directory before .kobo, the directory that has .kobo in it. Then properly eject the device from your PC and disconnect the USB cable. You should then see your device processing the media, if not then restart Nickel. Now you should have the PNG image as an icon on Nickel's home page. Selecting that icon should bring up a full page image. Then you return to Nickel's home page. Now connect the USB cable again and copy the KoboRoot.tgz, from the Koreader download zip, into your device's .kobo directory. When you then eject and disconnect the USB cable, you should see the "updating" message on your device.
