My question is do I need to buy and install an anti-virus or is the computer covered. I do not want to be worrying about viruses on her laptop.

What exactly did the message say? Before Win 8 Windows Defender was purely a firewall.... MS SE is an anti-virus and those two are not the same.
If they both came bundled with Windows 8.1, great. If not, the sooner you find out, the better. Avira, Avast, AVG, are good free AV alternatives.
