Those were academic type publishers and may not (probably doesn't) apply to your average NYT bestseller, but it's put me off risking Google's store.

You should get a warning if it's not a reflowable epub. Like "zooming will be required to read on smaller screens". You can also get a sample first on an android device and if it's not a normal epub, the font and sizing options will not be there. I think this used to be a problem years ago.
