Wings of a Dream by Anne Mateer is her apparently standalone historical coming-of-age drama novel with strong romantic elements, set during WWI on the homefront, starring a young woman who must cope with the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic (
Wikipedia) in a small town in the course of helping care for her aunt's orphans while separated from her aviator beau, free courtesy of Christian publisher Baker's Bethany House imprint.
Apparently, this is tilted much more towards the historical than the romantic, despite the lead acquiring multiple suitors, as some of the customer reviews complain that it's a downer sort of book and that even the main character's romance didn't seem all that happy. YMMV.
