I use this indispensable app that will automatically send a text or an email to the recipient with a message/reminder. Or, can be set up to remind you to make a call with the contact and number popping up. It can be set for hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly reminders. I set text reminders for myself routinely! I like it so much I eventually purchased the pro version:
