Question author name - which is correct R.R or R. R. ?

George R. R. Martin
or
George R.R. Martin

I seem to have a mixture- so may as well get it 100%

& for my own education - the general rule for an author with a double middle initial is what - space or no space ? or do publishers just take a wild guess ?
