Cheaper, not likely.

I guess that the Kaohsiung airport is better, especially since one of the Taipei runways is closing for repairs in March. But massive delays are unlikely.

Our younger son lives there. And I'm quite pro-Taiwan, thinking you can't go much wrong.

However, many locals now avoid top attractions -- for example, Sun Moon Lake -- which they feel have been overrun by PRC tour groups. Taiwanese are too polite to criticize littering mainlanders to their face, but they sure don't like it.

You could try looking at a few of the English-language Taiwan blogs and, if desired, posting there.
