That didn't work for me, but I was encouraged that something would work.
This worked on my Kindle 1st Generation:
Home
Menu
Settings
Restart
PRESS HOME BUTTON IMMEDIATELY UPON RESTART HOLDING DOWN THE BUTTON CONTINUOUSLY
Then you get the option "Firmware reset" that displays.
After that firmware reset, the option to "Unpdate Your Kindle" becomes available (grayed out before), which I also did.
