Well, I'd say it's more the book that raised public awareness to the existence of cyberpunk. John Shirley's City Come A-Walkin' is more appropriately recognized as the first published cyberpunk work (although K.W. Jeter's Dr. Adder was written earlier, it wasn't published until 1984).
