Make sure you use the Real Goodreads app not the Goodreads for Kindle app. They are two different apps an the regular one works fine. you can always sideload the Google version if want the latest features.
I don't know how more simpler a UI can get on a tablet but you have to get use to the side menus of the newer Android then it will get easier for you. This is really not a Kindle Fire thing but KitKat and above design.
The Kindle Fire 6 is made for a media tablet. If you don't use it for Reading, Music, Audiobooks, Videos or light gaming then yes it wont be what you want. I think it is the perfect tablet made for reading.

Thanks. I'm not accustomed to Android at all actually.
And I've just been told that what I thought was a "menu" - the 3 little lines in the corner - is actually a"drawer" that I can slide. This actually alleviates most of my annoyance and disappointment. I'm not sure what you mean by using the "real" GoodReads app.
