I'm quite surprised by the high level of abandonment. It's got to be that people didn't click the last page.
I believe that Kobo synchronizes the last read page between devices, so they could tell whether you finished a book proper and skipped the end material. Even if they didn't know where the book proper ended, they could make a reasonable guess (e.g. 90% completion would probably be sufficient, even in books that include sample chapters).
