You do not need to run Windows 7. Just install Classic Shell and you'll have your desktop back. Also, do not download and install any win 8 programs that have anything to do with eBooks. They don't generally work the same as the desktop versions and the DRM removal tools won't with Windows 8 versions. Go for the Windows 7/Desktop versions and you'll be good to go.
