You have to be very careful changing the opf, just because of this reason. What I sometimes do, is make a copy of the opf and paste it in Notepad++ first. That way I continue to have a starting ground.
That being said, changing the OPF is usually not required. Most changes can be done in another way. What are you trying to do?
