Alternatively, you can simply install the binary release Kovid suggested. It contains all dependencies bundled locally
so you don't have to worry about what libs are installed.
Or get yourself a decent rolling release distro like
ArchLinux*.
* -- reminds me I need to go bug them about not stripping modified libs in favor of system copies...
