I have used cases for all my reading devices over the years. I had a hard case for my palm pilot. I have a pretty good soft case for my Sony PRS-500 (good enough to put it in my backpack when I go backpacking). I have battery cases for my iPads and iPhones (Kudo battery case for the iPads, Mophie battery cases for the iPhones). The only time I've broken a device, was when I put my iPhone in my pocket without the case, and it fell out on the concrete walkway, eventually becoming unusable.
