My impression is that the only substantial change made to the Chinese iLiad was the addition of fonts.
It should be possible to add fonts to the DR1000. What Matthijs of iRex said
here (in answer to the question "Isn't there method of changing or adding the font?"):

Yes there is, but it's not user-friendly and you have to be a bit of a programmer/Linux-connoisseur.
The Linux font-config mechanism is not really ready for fonts on removable storage, so it has to be copied to internal flash. I won't give you details, since I don't want you to screw up your device (although you can always recover it from an SD card with a software update).

Fonts were a pain on the iLiad too, but with the more up to date Linux on the DR1000, they really should not be that hard. So far as I know, no one has looked in detail at the DR font setup. The actual setup is typically defined in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf. If it is configured like the iLiad (i.e. like most Linux systems) user-supplied fonts can go in the directory ~/.fonts and the text file ~/.fonts.conf would define where else they can go (e.g. on the SD card). These files do not seem to exist on the DR1000.
If you can get a Chinese font on the DR1000, FBReader will definitely be able to use it. My guess is that the MOBI reader won't be able to use it, and I'm not sure about the PDF reader.
