Me, I read voraciously from the age of three. My parents approved except when I did things like walk into lamp posts with my head buried in a book.
I volunteered at my childrens' school library when my twins were in elementary. There was a student who finally found a book she was interested in reading, which was particularly important because she was a relatively low reader and we had been trying to encourage her to practice. The next day she said she had to return the book.
When I asked if she minded telling me why, she said her mom didn't want her reading about magic because her mother was afraid she (the student) would try to learn how to become a witch. I was so upset, but of course I couldn't say anything.
