"Send to device" leaving droppings in the library?

My library is set up for primarily epubs.
I have some mixed mobi/epub where the conversion ends in epub, and I can go back to the mobi if needed to fix something.

When I hooked up a Kindle and used "Send to Device" I get 'bonus' mobi files in the library.

This is counter to my expectation ("send to device" should be read-only on my local library), and frustrating in that it is unclear what the original format should be.

Is there a tweak to disable this behavior?
