If Kobo is going with Qt5 for the Windows Desktop program, then they do not want to try to support XP and have a support nightmare.
Old software can run on newer hardware but not all newer software can run on obsolete hardware. Qt5 cannot run on old processors that are not up-to-date enough. A lot of XP instals are on such obsolete hardware and Kobo is correct in doing what was done with Calibre and Sigil. As I said before, there has been 5.5 years between the time Windows 7 was released and now. So I do not feel for anyone who is running obsolete hardware claiming poverty for why not upgrading. Save $10 a month and by now there would be enough $ to upgrade the hardware and OS.
