Let's leave the question of the multiple ereaders aside and address broadway's issue. The way that I maintain my bookmarks across the paper white and the basic is that there is a command for that when I am at home and on my network. Go to the top of your paperwhite screen and tap on the top such that the icons appear across the top. Tap on the icon on the right side of the screen, it looks like three lines on top of each other then tap sync to farthest page read and the kindle will sync. However if I am not at home this will not work because it requires my network, so what I do then is to click the three lines on the right side of the screen again and reading progress, and select location in book. At this point the kindle will give me a location number that I copy into the other book reader. So in a sense I do a manual sync.
I just want to clarify that syncing can be done over any wireless network. You should be able to sync from any wireless network with a connection to the internet--if your books are uploaded to Amazon, then the bookmarks, annotations, and current reading position are stored on Amazon's servers and accessible from the internet, not stored on your home network.
