I don't Java, but it seems to me that one of the purposes was to escape the sandbox restrictions (such as not accessing external libraries).

Q: How do the other Kindlet applications handle using external libraries?

There must be more than one example within the existing applications.
Even if you ignore JBPatch internals. JBPatch is a bit extreme in its penetration of the java libraries.
