The Reader can directly access books from the SD card, but in this case the first loading and the first font size change takes some time (10 - 60 seconds) due to formatting. If you transfer with the eBook Library software, the formatting is done on your PC (much faster).
Too many books on the SD card will result in very slow performance when navigating between books on the reader.

I see no reason using an SD card at all.
Is the SD card not handy for mp3 files and for storing your overall/historic library without clogging up the in machine memory?
