I've seen the 'right type of magnet' described as a rare-earth magnet, but some people have pried loose the magnets attached to cheap fridge-magnets. Just try any small magnet you can lay your hands on.

I just tried a bunch of fridge magnets. They did not cause the H2O to sleep.
