As I understand it, your battery isn't going to instantly stop working if it goes dead (and most devices won't really let it go truly dead unless you leave it for an extended period - weeks or months, not days), but once you're down to levels where it shows dead you may get irreversible crystalization start to occur. This could reduce your battery life if it happened often enough. With the battery life of an e-reader you won't likely notice, a phone or tablet that you may be charging daily it's more likely to be noticeable.
