It is fantastic that he loves to read!! This is especially true seeing how its not "practiced" much within his immediate family. You are being an awesome great-aunt, IMO, by supporting his love of reading.
There is nothing overtly negative in NERDS. There is "mild" violence, mostly towards the end of the books, as the the issues near resolution.
I hope they make it to the approved list, it really is a fun series!
