Thanks for all the responses! Of the suggestions, The Dark is Rising, Belgariad, the Tad Williams, and possibly the Feist and McKillip sound like exactly what I'm looking for. I'll probably have a look at them before I recommend anything to her. I'm still open to other suggestions though - like I said it doesn't have to be high fantasy.
