As it is pointless to upgrade the operating system on this hardware and as I am not planning to buy a new computer I am wondering what options I have.

Any suggestion? For example is there a compiled 32 bit version that just adds the support of the newer devices?

(*) I read that Calibre on 32 bit was stopped at version 1.48, however the one I am running reads version 2.0.0, which puzzles me.
I suggest that you look into running Robolinux. It will use your current c: drive as the Windows XP VM. Then install and use the latest Linux calibre, do all your web browsing using Linux and then run all your windows programs in the VM.

The LXDE version is the one you will that will probably work best.
